Orientation is the free performance upgrade most plans ignore. In Boise’s climate, a few early choices control summer heat, spring wind, and winter brightness without expensive tech.
Sun & glass. Place morning‑use rooms (kitchen, breakfast, office) to the east. Size south overhangs to invite winter sun while shading July. Keep big west glass out of seating areas or add architectural shade.
Wind & patios. Use the house mass, low walls, or plantings to shelter spring breezes. Put grills and heaters where airflow helps, not hinders. Rough‑in gas and power at design time so upgrades are easy.
Everyday routes. Keep garage noise and trash pull‑paths away from windows and outdoor rooms. On corner or through‑lots, side‑load garages often improve curb appeal—balance that with turning radii and snow storage.
We’ll model sun angles, wind patterns, and views so the home feels calm in July and bright in January. Orientation is how good design becomes great living.
